On December 25, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War. General George Washington and his Continental Army planned a daring crossing of the Delaware River from Pennsylvania to New Jersey. The crossing was carried out in the midst of a harsh winter and caught the British and Hessian forces by surprise. This last gambit is what permitted the Continentals to begin hoping for victory.
